	Abstract:	Abram Garfield (1872-1958) was the son of president James A. Garfield who became a Cleveland, Ohio, architect, co-founder and president of the School of Architecture (later a part of Western Reserve University), and member of the Regional Association of Cleveland. The collection consists of sketchbooks, diaries, and miscellaneous papers, including drawings, paintings, sketches, and writings. Also included are two autograph books of Marshall Van Horn. A major subject of the artwork is views of Europe. Topics of the diaries include architecture and World War II.

3	Title:	Maurice E. Van Metre Papers

	Abstract:	Maurice E. Van Metre (1895-1970) was a popular Cleveland, Ohio, journalist who served as theater and radio-television critic and gossip columnist for the Cleveland News and suburban Sun newspapers. During World War II, he published "The Dirt at the News", a monthly newsletter for Cleveland members of the armed forces, which included the whereabouts and experiences of Cleveland servicemen, especially 120 former News employees. The collection consists almost entirely of letters to Van Metre from friends and former co-workers who subscribed to The Dirt at the News. These letters represent a portion of those Van Metre compiled and edited into his entertaining miniature newspaper and include letters from many well-known persons, providing insights into the war-time experiences of servicemen at home, as well as the battlefront. Also included are some printed materials relating to Van Metre and his newsletter.

4	Title:	John C. Morley Papers

	Abstract:	John C. Morely was a Cleveland, Ohio, lawyer who served with the 192nd Tank Battalion of the United States Army during World War II. His unit was captured by the Japanese when Bataan fell in 1942 and Morley was confined in various Japanese prison camps on the Philippine Islands until Nov. 1944 when the prisoners were shipped to Japan. Morley died on this voyage, along with three-fourths of his fellow prisoners. The collection consists of biographical sketches, his diaries, correspondence, largely from his father, John E. Morley, certificates, military records, and newspaper clippings. The collection focuses on the conditions endured by American prisoners of war during World War II, including experiences on the "Bataan Death March", and the anxiety their families experienced while waiting for word on the fate of their loved ones.

5	Title:	Sigmund H. Wojcik and Mike A. Ruby Collection

	Abstract:	Sigmund H. Wojcik (b. 1917 was the son of Polish immigrants. He grew up in the Tremont area of Cleveland, Ohio, and graduated from Lincoln High School in June of 1935. Wojcik joined the Naval Reserve at 17 and re-enlisted in the Navy in 1940 after receiving his draft card. He served first on the USS Wilmington, and then on the USS Polaris, a Navy supply ship. While on board the Polaris, Wojcik served in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific, and held the position of Chief Boatswain's Mate. He met Mike Ruby on board, and the two became fast friends and roommates. In September of 1945, after the end of the war, he received his honorable discharge and returned to the Cleveland area. Mike A. Ruby (b. June 12, 1918) was born in Campbell, Ohio, and moved to Cleveland shortly after. His family moved to Parma before he was enrolled in junior high school. Always enjoying a fascination for the water, Ruby joined the Naval Reserve at 17 and served in the United States Navy during World War II on board the USS Polaris. Most likely because of his skill at hands-on work, Ruby worked as a painter and a carpenter, eventually earning the title of Chief Carpenter's Mate. While on board the Polaris, Ruby served in the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the Pacific. He is the best friend and former bunkmate of Sigmund H. Wojcik. Although the war ended in September of 1945, Ruby was one of the last members aboard the Polaris to be honorably discharged, which he received on October 14, 1945. The collection consists of oral histories, scrapbooks, photographs, sailor's logs, newspaper clippings, various printed material (mostly printed during WWII), and other miscellaneous objects. James S. Wojcik, Sigmund Wojcik's son, helped his father gather many of the materials found in the collection, including many photographs and a scrapbook. A smaller part of the collection was sent in by Mike Ruby himself.

	Abstract:	George Knowles was a Cleveland, Ohio, patent attorney who served as assistant executive in charge of patents in the Engineering Department of Materiel Command at Wright Field Air Corps Base (Dayton, Ohio) during World War II. Margaret Knowles was his wife. The collection consists primarily of correspondence, organizational materials, journals, and military files. The collection pertains primarily to George Knowles' military experience, involvement with patents, and organizational activities with the Cleveland Patent Law Association, Exchange Club of Euclid and the Wildwood Yacht Club. Included is a small amount of material relating to Knowles' wife, Margaret, and his nephew, Myles Knowles.

7	Title:	Russell Cartwright Stroup Papers

	Abstract:	Russell Cartwright Stroup was a Methodist minister and later a Presbyterian minister who spent his early years in East Cleveland, Ohio. He was the son of Ner Wallace Stroup and Emma Cartwright Stroup. In 1914, his father was killed and his mother crippled in a trolley accident, and in 1918 Emma Stroup moved with her three children to California. Russell Stroup attended Stanford University and Drew Theological Seminary. He served two Methodist churches in California from 1927-1934. He moved to Virginia with his mother and brother in 1934, and served as the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Lynchburg, Virginia. Although a pacifist, he enlisted in the United States Army in World War II, serving as a chaplain in the South Pacific. In 1947 he married Louis Wells Baker. He was pastor of Georgetown Presbyterian Church in Washington, D.C. 1950-1970, and died in 1977. His nephew, Richard Cartwright Austin, edited a book based on Stroup's letters, entitled Letters from the Pacific: a Combat Chaplain in World War II. Austin is the great-grandson of the founder of the Cleveland, Ohio, firm, the Austin Company. The collection consists of certificates, a diary, envelopes, letters, newspaper and Congressional Record clippings, programs, publications, and service records related to Russell Cartwright Stroup's World War II service in the South Pacific as an army chaplain.

	Abstract:	Henry Jerry John (1885-1971) was a Cleveland, Ohio, physician who specialized in diabetes. He was born Jindrich Jeroslav John, in Czechoslovakia, and emigrated to the United States ca. 1889. He and his wife founded Camp Ho Mita Koda for diabetic children in 1929. He served in the Army Medical Corps during both world wars. The collection consists of an autobiography, biographical information, diaries, journals, correspondence, medical and literary writings, drawings, legal documents, naturalization papers, contracts, awards, certificates, newspaper clippings and miscellaneous material. Also included are papers of Elizabeth B. John and records of Camp Ho Mita Koda.

	Abstract:	Michael Kowan and his wife, Rachel Howitz Kowan, owned and operated Kay's Book and Magazine Supermarket in downtown Cleveland, Ohio. Michael served in World War II and was in England, 1943-1945. The collection consists of family materials, including photograph albums and volumes of Michael's poetry; scrapbooks of Michael and Rachel's travels, particularly to New York City; letters, photographs and articles relating to Kay's Book and Magazine Supermarket; and scrapbooks of souvenirs, photographs and letters relating to Michael's military service and London during World War II, including aerial shots taken in the skies of Great Britain during the war.
